Gluten Free Make-up

gluten-free-make-upI came across a couple of articles recently talking about gluten free make up. I had to do a double take and let my brain take it in. Gluten… in make up? What? Yes I too never knew make up contained gluten in it. Apparently its used to help bulk and plump and bind make up ingredients together amongst other things.

I was really surprised and have never heard of glutenous make up before but intrigued I decided to check out a few websites for more info. It seems that ingesting gluten containing lipstick and smearing our faces, lymph nodes and glands with glutenous foundations and blushers; for those of you with coeliac disease or gluten intolerances, you could be doing yourself harm and wonder why you still feel sick whilst on a gluten free diet. It seems that its not just food we should be considering when on a gluten free diet but hair products, body lotions and make up too. Our skin is the biggest organ and absorbs everything we put on it. Some minerals / vitamins / chemicals absorb deeper into the skin layers than others but pretty much everything you ply onto your skin will go into your body and gluten containing make up will affect your immune system especially when pasted on around the glands. ( … and let’s face it some of you gals literally paste on your foundation with palette knives!) It’s kind of logical when you think about it. But also alarming at the same time as many of us probably don’t even think about gluten outside of the kitchen. So if you are breaking out in rashes, sores or have problematic skin, feel tired still and struggle with coeliac / gluten intolerance symptoms but are on a gluten free diet consider your make up and other products around you that may be underlying culprits!

Gluten free make up brands to look for include Red Apple Lipstick, Afterglow Cosmetics, Smashbox Cosmetics, NARS Cosmetics, Lancome, Ecco Bella, Pure SKN Cosmetics, Gluten Free Beauty and No Gluten Natural Girl. Also as a tip check the labels of make up and beauty products, ask skin specialists and make up artists / advisers in beauty salons / counters in department stores and generally find out, which make up is gluten free and safe to use.

Here is a rough list of make up ingredients that contain gluten. Watch out for these next time you go to buy a new lipstick! (List originally from Kristen on www.naturallydahling.com)
